The Life You Want Lives Just Outside the Comfort You Defend

Let me tell you something most people don’t want to admit.
People don’t just enjoy comfort. They defend it.
They defend routines that bore them.
They defend careers that drain them.
They defend lifestyles that quietly suffocate the dreams they once had.
And the strangest part?
They defend these things as if they were protecting something valuable.
But what they’re really protecting is fear.
Fear of uncertainty.
Fear of failure.
Fear of what other people might think.
So instead of stepping forward into the life they actually want…
They stay right where they are.
Comfortable.
Safe.
And slowly disconnected from the vision their soul once gave them.
The Comfort I Had to Break in Order to Create the Life I Dreamed of Living
Let me give you a real example from my own life.
In 1994 I was working in telecommunications earning about $70,000 a year in a middle-management position. At the time, it was a very stable career. Good paycheck. Benefits. Predictable future.
In other words, I was living inside a very comfortable box.
But several years earlier, in my early 20s I had written a goal for myself:
Start my own consulting company by the age of forty.
And goals with deadlines have a way of confronting your comfort.
That’s because the moment a goal becomes deadline constrained, it forces a question:
Are you willing to leave the safety of the present to create the future you say you want?
For me, the answer was yes. It was time.
So on Feb 14, 1994, Valentine’s Day, I incorporated InER-G Solutions, Ltd, and on Feb 22nd gave my two week notice. Then, on March 9th I left my comfort zone job and promoted myself to Founder, CEO and President of InER-G Solutions, Ltd.
Naturally, when it was announced that I was leaving the company people wanted to know where I was going to work next. Many were excited for me.
But when I told them I was starting my own company, the warnings (their fear, uncertainty, and doubt) immediately came flooding in:
“Don’t you know most businesses fail in the first year?”
“Didn’t you just have a baby?”
“Didn’t your wife just quit her job?”
“What about health benefits?”
In other words, they were defending the same comfort zone I had just stepped out of. It was overwhelming. But I was committed, and I believed in myself. I’ll tell you why in a subsequent post.
Anyway, the truth is this:
Every meaningful life transformation requires a moment when you choose courage over comfort.
So, the next day — March 10, 1994 — I began my consulting company with my very first client, a large, global beer brewery.
By the end of that same year, I had more than tripled my income!
But the income wasn’t the most important thing.
What mattered most was the realization that came with it:
The life I wanted had been waiting for me just outside the comfort I had been defending.
And once I stepped outside it, demonstrating my commitment… “All sorts of things occurred to help me that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issued from the decision, raising in my favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which I could never have dreamed would have come my way.” (personalized) - William Hutchison Murray, The Scottish Himalayan Expedition
I never looked back.
Comfort Is a Silent Negotiation With Your Potential
Most people believe comfort is harmless.
It isn’t.
Comfort is your mind quietly negotiating with your soul over your potential.
It whispers things like:
“Stay where it’s safe.”
“Now isn’t the right time.”
“You should wait until things are more certain.”
But here is the brutal truth:
The entrepreneur doesn’t feel certain before starting her business.
The artist doesn’t feel certain before creating.
The person who reinvents their life doesn’t feel certain before stepping forward.
They simply make a decision.
And that decision changes everything.
The Real Question
The real question isn’t whether you have a dream.
Most people do.
The real question is this:
What comfort are you defending that is preventing you from living that dream?
Know this… somewhere in your life right now there is a boundary.
A line.
On one side of that line is the life you currently live.
On the other side is the life you say you want.
And the only thing separating the two… is your willingness to step outside the comfort you have learned to protect via the mental programming that you haven’t yet upgraded… Let that sink in.
Invest 5 Minutes to Snap Yourself Into A New Reality!
Take five minutes right now and do this simple exercise.
1. Reflect
Ask yourself one honest question:
What comfort am I currently defending that is limiting my life?
Is it a job?
A routine?
A belief about yourself?
Write it down.
2. Write
Now complete this sentence:
“If I stopped defending this comfort, I would begin ______.”
Don’t overthink it.
Just write the first truthful answer that comes to you.
3. Act
Within the next 24 hours, take one small action in that direction.
Make the phone call.
Send the email.
Start the plan.
Take the first step.
Because the moment you act…
You stop defending comfort.
And you start creating the life waiting just outside it.
Editorial Postscript.
The placard is a picture of me in 1997 with several numbers of my team, the and the CEO of Sears at the time with several of his team members. That year, Sears was a $39 billion dollar company, and my largest client. My company had been select as their top supplier that year out of more than 10,000 supplier/partners. My company was only 3 years old. 🙏🏾
