The MJ Imperatives for a Life Well Lived!

After nearly seven decades of living, building businesses, raising a family, coaching lots of people, navigating triumphs and setbacks, and watching technology reshape the world multiple times, I've come to know that a meaningful life isn't built on luck.

It is built on a handful of decisions.

Not decisions you make once.

Decisions you make over and over again.

When I look back across my own journey—from a young software engineer fascinated by the future, to building my first consulting company, to today's world of artificial intelligence and data—I can trace nearly every meaningful accomplishment back to five simple imperatives.

They've become the operating system for my life.

Perhaps they'll become part of yours.

Think Differently.

Every transformation begins with a different thought.

Long before my company existed, it lived in my imagination. Before there was a business plan... Before there was a customer... Before there was even an opportunity... There was simply a decision.

I would own my own company before I turned forty.

That wasn't positive thinking.

It was a different way of thinking.

As I wrote in a recent post, "a changed mindset is not positive thinking—it is the beginning of a different life," your life begins changing the moment your internal identity changes.

Reality always follow.

See Further.

Most people see today.

Successful people learn to see tomorrow.

As a young software engineer in the late 1970s, I questioned why we continued designing software dates with only two-digit years. The year 2000 seemed far away to many people.

To me, it was inevitable.

Later, as a data architect, I watched information evolve from something used primarily for reporting into one of the most valuable strategic assets in business.

I wasn't simply watching information technology.

I was watching the future being born.

That's why I wrote, "The Future Leaves Footprints in the Present."

If you learn to recognize those footprints early enough, they become opportunities.

Prepare Earlier.

Seeing the future isn't enough.

You have to prepare for it.

Years before launching my first company, I quietly prepared.

I learned.

I built relationships.

I wrote a business plan.

I calculated exactly what it would take financially to leave corporate America.

Then, almost unbelievably, the opportunities I needed began appearing.

The right people. The right project. The right customer.

Some call it coincidence.

I believe preparation has a remarkable way of recognizing opportunity.

Preparation creates confidence.

Confidence creates courage.

And courage changes lives.

Act Decisively.

Eventually there comes a moment when planning has done all it can do.

The only thing left is action.

Leaving a secure career to launch a consulting company while welcoming our first child into the world was one of the biggest decisions of my life.

There was no guarantee.

Only belief.

The same principle applies to almost every dream.

Most people don't fail because they lack talent.

They fail because they hesitate until the opportunity belongs to someone else.

Action is what separates dreams from results.

Persist Longer.

Nothing worthwhile happens overnight.

Businesses aren't built overnight.

Relationships aren't built overnight.

Character isn't built overnight.

Even transformation happens one decision at a time.

One workout.

One conversation.

One lesson.

One setback.

One comeback.

Persistence isn't stubbornness.

Persistence is trusting that the future you're building is worth today's sacrifice. That it is worth finding a way through, over, or around setbacks and obstacles that are uncovered only by MOVING FORWARD.

The world just saw that in England's comeback victory over Norway in the World Cup quarter final last night.

It was the quiet discipline of refusing to quit before the victory was cemented.

The Threads That Connect Everything

If you've followed my writing, you've probably noticed these ideas appearing again and again.

When I write about mindset... I'm really talking about thinking differently.

When I write about recognizing macro trends like artificial intelligence... I'm talking about seeing further.

When I encourage you to write your goals, define your vision, and prepare before the opportunity appears... I'm talking about preparing earlier.

When I challenge you to leave your comfort zone... I'm talking about acting decisively.

And when I remind you that meaningful change requires consistency... I'm talking about persisting longer.

These aren't separate lessons. There timeless principles...

They're one philosophy.

They build upon each other.

Think differently.

See further.

Prepare earlier.

Act decisively.

Persist longer.

Master these five imperatives, and you'll begin to notice something remarkable. You won't simply become better at achieving goals. You'll become better at creating your future. And... your happiness will abound!

Because a life well lived isn't found.

It is intentionally built—one thought, one decision, and one courageous action at a time.
