Don’t Take the Offense Bait

Taking offense is a choice—and every time you do, you take your focus ‘off’ your ‘end’ goal for a distraction.”

There’s a moment—usually fast, almost invisible—where something happens.

Someone says something.

Someone does something.

Something doesn’t go your way.

And in that instant… You have options.

But most people don’t experience it that way.

Most people feel like offense just happens to them.

“They offended me.”

But that’s not actually true.

The Hidden Choice

What really happened is this:

Something was said or done—neutral in its existence.

And then your mind made a decision.

  • “That makes me happy.”

  • “That makes me angry.”

  • “That offends me.”

Same input.

Different outcomes.

Because the reaction wasn’t given to you…

It was chosen by you.

Breaking Down the Word Offend

Years ago, I heard something that completely reframed this for me.

The word offend.

Break it down:

OFF – END

And what happens when you take offense?

You take your focus off your end goal.

You lose focus.

You shift your attention away from where you were going... and onto something that doesn’t move you forward.

The Cost of Taking Offense

Here’s what makes this so powerful—and so dangerous.

Your mind can only consciously focus on one thing at a time.

So the moment you choose offense:

  • You stop thinking about your goals

  • You stop progressing toward your destination

  • You start replaying the moment

  • You start building a narrative

“How could they say that?”

“Who do they think they are?”

“That’s not right…”

And just like that—

You’ve traded progress for distraction.

The Real Trap

The trap isn’t what was said.

The trap is what you do with it.

Because once you take offense, your energy shifts:

  • From creation → to reaction

  • From forward motion → to emotional processing

  • From your path → to someone else’s behavior

And now…

They’re driving your focus.

An Empowering Choice

What if you made a different decision?

What if, instead of taking offense, you let it fall off you like rain off of an umbrella.

No attachment.

No internalization.

No detour.

You see it.

You hear it.

You keep moving.

Because you understand something most people don’t:

Everything is an input—but your reaction is a choice that determines your output.

Reality Shaping in Real Time

This is where your work comes into play.

Reality shaping isn’t just about big decisions.

It’s about micro-decisions.

Moment-to-moment.

Choice-by-choice.

Every time you choose:

  • Focus over distraction

  • Purpose over reaction

  • Direction over emotion

You are shaping your reality.

Invest 5 Minutes to Snap Yourself Into a New Reality

1. Recall a Recent Moment

When did you last feel offended?

2. Replay It Differently

What were your other options in that moment?

3. Identify the Cost

What did taking offense pull your attention away from?

4. Reframe the Trigger

Instead of “That offended me,” say:

“I chose offense.”

5. Choose a New Pattern

Next time it happens, pause and ask:

“Does this move me toward my end goal… or away from it?”

In Summary...

The next time someone says something that could offend you…

Don’t take it.

Not because it doesn’t matter.

But because your destination matters more.

Let it pass.

Stay focused.

Keep moving.

Because every time you refuse to take offense…

you stay on your path.
