The Dawning of the Agentic AI Era - What, Why, How.

The Dawning of the Agentic AI Era

In January of 2023 I wrote a post titled “The Dawning of the Post-Pandemic Era.”

At that time the world was emerging from a once-in-a-century disruption. The Covid 19 pandemic had reset the way we work, play, travel, collaborate, and think about the future. It felt like a major turning point, a sizemic shift in the tectonic plates of the planet!

And it was.

But what I didn’t fully appreciate at the time was that it was only the beginning…

Now, a short 3 years later we are standing at the threshold of something far more disruptive and profound. We are entering the era of Agentic Generative AI.

What is Agentic GenAI?

In simple terms, generative AI creates outputs when asked, (think ChatGPT) while agentic generative AI acts like a digital worker pursuing an objective (think Tesla Full Self‑Driving (FSD))

It can research information, analyze data, make decisions, navigate within defined contextual boundaries, coordinate workflows, and continuously adapt its approach until the goal is achieved. This has far-reaching and profound implications for the world as we have known it.

You see, this shift—from tools that respond to instructions to systems that pursue goals—marks a significant revolutionary transformation in how technology can augment human productivity and problem solving.

This is Something Different.

I am writing this while attending Gartner’s Data & Analytics Conference in Orlando.

I’ve spent more than four decades working in information technology, and I’ve witnessed multiple waves of transformation.

Mainframes.

Client-server computing.

The internet.

Mobile.

Big Data.

Cloud.

Each of those shifts evolved the landscape of business and technology. But what I am seeing today is different.

The pace of innovation has morphed, and the scope of impact is broader than anything I’ve experienced in my entire career.

Walking the exhibitor floor here in Orlando tells the story. Booth after booth after booth filled with companies focused on AI.

Many are startups that didn’t exist three years ago. Others are established technology providers rapidly reinventing themselves around this new paradigm. Companies like IBM, Salesforce, even Google.

Everywhere you look, the same theme appears:

AI agents. Autonomous systems. Intelligent workflows. Digital workers.

And they are being deployed in ways that even I couldn’t have imagined just five years ago.

From Tools to Agents

For decades, computers were just tools.

They processed data.

They executed instructions.

They accelerated tasks we already knew how to perform.

They produced reports and dashboards.

But AI agents are rapidly introducing something new.

They don’t just execute instructions.

They can interpret goals, plan steps, and execute workflows with minimal to no human intervention. In other words, the machine is no longer just a tool. It’s becoming at least an active participant in the creation of outcomes, and in some cases it’s becoming the worker.

This shift is transforming how work gets done.

Entire processes are rapidly being redesigned.

New industries are emerging.

Old ones will soon start to disappear.

The Real Question

When technological revolutions occur, most people focus on the technology itself. But history shows that the real impact comes from something else:

How people choose to respond to the change.

Some people will resist it. Others will ignore it.

But a smaller group is deciding to understand it, harness it, and use it to create something new.

Those people are the ones who shape the future.

What This Means for You and Me

If you are paying attention, you can feel it. The ground is moving again. Only this time it is convulsing…

The rules are changing. And the opportunities are enormous for those who are willing to learn and adapt.

But here’s the key point.

Technology does not create success.

People create success.

Technology simply amplifies what people choose to do with it. And in the age of AI agents, your advantage will not come from simply using the technology. It will come from knowing what you want to create with it.

Why Goals Matter More Now Than Ever Before

This brings us back to a principle that has been at the center of my teaching for many years.

Goal setting.

In a world where intelligent systems can execute tasks faster than ever before, the most valuable human skill becomes something very specific:

Clarity of intention.

AI can generate answers. Agentic GenAI can even perform entire jobs.

Example: In several U.S. cities, you can request autonomous vehicles directly through the Uber app. Uber partners with Waymo for this service. In cities Austin and Atlanta, customers can be matched with a fully autonomous Waymo vehicle instead of a human driver.

AI can analyze data.

It can automate workflows.

But it still needs direction.

It needs someone to define the objective.

For example Uber’s leaders have shifted its strategy from building the driverless car to being the platform that orchestrates autonomous transportation.

Someone must articulate the vision.

Someone must decide what is worth building.

That is where human agency still reigns supreme.

The people who thrive in the next decade will be the ones who develop the ability to combine two things:

Clear goals.

Powerful tools.

The Opportunity of This Moment

Standing here at this conference, surrounded by dozens of companies building the next generation of AI capabilities, one thing has become very clear.

We are still early. It’s still the Wild Wild West! But the pace of maturity is rapidly accelerating… these capabilities are improving every month.

New ideas are appearing every week.

And the people who begin experimenting today will have an enormous advantage tomorrow.

Because the future will belong to those who learn how to harness this technology to advance their vision.

The Bridge Still Has to Be Crossed

For all the excitement around Agentic GenAI, one truth remains unchanged, at least for the time being…

A vision still has to be formed.

A goal still has to be defined.

And someone still has to step forward and begin.

The tools may be more powerful than ever before.

But the responsibility to use them wisely still belongs to us.

So the real question in this new Agentic era is not whether AI will change the world.

It already is.

The real question is this:

What GOAL are you going to achieve with it?

There is urgency…

Invest 5 Minutes to Snap Yourself Into a New Reality!

Take five minutes right now and do this simple exercise.

1. Reflect

Think about the rapid changes happening around you—AI agents, automation, intelligent systems reshaping industries.

Ask yourself this question:

Where could this technology accelerate something I want to create in my life or career?

Don’t overthink it. Just notice the first big idea that comes to mind.

2. Write

Complete this sentence:

“One way I could harness AI to advance my goal / career is ______.”

It could be learning a tool, experimenting with automation, improving productivity, or exploring a new opportunity.

The objective isn’t perfection.

The objective is awareness and intention.

3. Act

Take one small step today to explore that idea.

Read about a tool.

Test an AI Tool.

Ask a better question.

Experiment with something new.

The future will belong to the people who don’t just watch change happen—but learn to harness it.

Your new reality begins the moment you act.
