Sometimes You Just Need a Sign

Sometimes life doesn’t whisper.

Sometimes it just puts the answer right in front of your face.

In my case… I literally taped it to the wall.

Directly across from my bed.

Every morning when I wake up — 5:00 a.m. sharp — that sign is the first thing I see.

It’s not fancy.

It’s a piece of paper.

Handwritten.

The corner is even ripped.

But it might be one of the most powerful tools I’ve ever created for myself.

Because that piece of paper removes negotiation from my morning.

The Moment When the Mind Starts Negotiating

Let me be honest.

Not every morning feels heroic.

Some mornings I wake up energized and ready to attack the day.

Other mornings?

My body says something different.

“You went to bed late.”

“You had a long day yesterday.”

“Maybe skip the workout today.”

If you’ve ever tried to build a discipline, you know that voice.

The mind is incredibly skilled at negotiating its way out of growth.

That’s why I created the sign.

Because the moment I get out of bed, I have to walk past it on the way to the bathroom.

And when I see it… the conversation ends.

The program begins.

The Program on the Wall

The sign is simple.

It tells me exactly what to do.

No thinking required.

  1. Get Up

  2. Bathroom

  3. Weigh In / Vital Signs

  4. Meds & Supplements

  5. Pre-Workout

  6. Workout Clothes

  7. Work Out

  8. Get Ready for Work

That’s it.

A simple program.

But programs beat motivation every time.

Because motivation is emotional.

Programs are structural.

When the structure is in place, the decision has already been made.

And that is what that sign represents.

A decision I made long before the moment when my mind tries to renegotiate it.

The Only Bad Workout

I have options.

I have a gym at home.

I can drive to LA Fitness.

I can walk across to the fitness center in my complex.

So the truth is…

I really don’t have an excuse.

And I remind myself of something I’ve believed for years:

The only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen.

Because once the workout begins, everything changes.

Energy rises.

Focus sharpens.

My vision for the day becomes clearer.

My plans begin to organize themselves.

Momentum starts.

The day becomes intentional.

And it all started with a piece of paper taped to a wall.

Sometimes you really do just need a sign.

Fitness and Health: The Foundation of Life

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That’s the only reason it’s here. In May I turn 68. This picture was taken two weeks ago. Fitness and health has been foundational my entire life.

As I’ve said in prior posts, in my philosophy of life, I’ve learned that there are eight areas that must stay in balance.

  1. Spiritual — your true north

  2. Fitness & Health

  3. Personal Development

  4. Relationships

  5. Vocation — career, business, work

  6. Financial

  7. Lifestyle

  8. Recreation

Fitness and health sits second for a reason.

Because without the energy of a healthy body, everything else becomes harder, life becomes shorter, and happiness becomes elusive.

Your work suffers.

Your thinking dulls.

Your relationships weaken.

Your dreams feel heavier than they should.

But when you invest in your health first…

Everything else rises with it.

Your energy fuels your thinking.

Your thinking fuels your vision.

Your vision fuels your life.

The Power of a Personal Trigger

That little sign hanging on my wall is what psychologists would call a trigger.

I call it something else.

I call it a reality snap.

Because the moment I see it, the mind stops negotiating and starts executing.

It snaps me into the reality I chose for myself.

Not the one my comfort zone prefers.

The one I decided to live.

And the best part?

Anyone can do this.

You don’t need a life coach.

You don’t need expensive programs.

Sometimes you just need one simple reminder placed where you cannot ignore it.

A sign.

A trigger.

A commitment staring back at you every morning.

The Dividends of One Simple Habit

I’ve started my mornings this way for years.

And the dividends have been enormous.

More energy.

More clarity.

More productivity.

More longevity.

But perhaps the biggest benefit is this:

Every morning I start the day by keeping a promise to myself.

And when you build a life where you keep promises to yourself…

Your confidence becomes unstoppable.

Invest 5 Minutes to Snap Yourself Into a New Reality!

Take five minutes right now and create your own sign.

1. Reflect

Ask yourself this question:

What one habit would dramatically improve my life if I did it every single morning?

Write it down.

2. Write

Create a simple program like mine.

Not ten steps.

Three to seven steps.

Clear.

Direct.

Actionable.

3. Act

Write it on a piece of paper.

Tape it somewhere you cannot avoid seeing it when you wake up.

Your bathroom mirror.

The wall across from your bed.

The back of your door.

Because sometimes the difference between the life you have and the life you want…

is simply this:

A sign you decided to obey.
