Aerospace and Defense Elastomers: Flexible Materials for Demanding Applications

Elastomers are specialized polymers known for their elasticity and ability to return to their original shape after deformation. In aerospace and defense systems, elastomers are widely used in components that require flexibility, sealing capability, and resistance to extreme environmental conditions.

These materials are commonly found in seals, gaskets, hoses, vibration dampers, and protective coverings. Their ability to absorb mechanical stress makes them particularly useful in systems exposed to vibration, pressure fluctuations, and temperature changes.

Aircraft engines, hydraulic systems, and fuel systems often rely on elastomer components to maintain tight seals. These seals prevent leaks and help ensure the safe operation of fluid-based systems. Because aerospace environments can involve extreme temperature ranges and exposure to chemicals, elastomers used in these applications must be carefully formulated to maintain durability.

Another important function of elastomers is vibration isolation. Aircraft engines and mechanical systems generate significant vibration during operation. Elastomer-based dampers reduce the transmission of these vibrations, helping protect sensitive components and improving structural stability.
